It's hot out where a lot of people are right now. The northern latitudes have plenty of extra summer thanks to climate change and those greenhouse gases.
So what better time to get some web-surfing in with a couple of my favorite surf songs of the past? With a bit of choice video to go with it, courtesy of those who post on You Tube. Hope you enjoy. First up is the title track to the original 1966 Bruce Brown documentary, "The Endless Summer" the story of a group of guys who travel the world for a perfect wave.
Next up is what should have been a huge hit from 1963 by The Beach Boys. Oddly enough it was never released as a single from their album "Surfer Girl". ***********************(from Wikipedia "Catch a Wave" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band, The Beach Boys. It was released on their 1963 album Surfer Girl. This song was recorded on July 14 and 16, 1963. This song is notable for the use of a harp played by Mike Love's sister, Maureen. The lead vocal was originally thought to be Dennis Wilson's, but in actuality, it is that of Mike Love with a heavy cold. ***********Also, the video has a definative look at the sites and sounds and motions of 1960's surf culture.

ReplyDeleteoldie but goodie Doug....I have never tried surfing living in Calif....but did play on the beaches at Santa Cruz and I think I used to be thin like those girls dancing the twist...lol

ReplyDeleteLater, I tried surfing in Florida on the Gulf Coast a couple times---the waves were none too impressive and neither was I. ;-)
Like this second one Doug - within the summer I recall going to Sears to buy an album which title I forget but I was hookeded on Barbaran....these where the Boys of Summer.
ReplyDeleteOMG, Doug I lived in San Jose too.....when we first moved there we lived on Camden Ave...and then when I got married I lived in Los Gatos, Santa Clara and then finally off of Santa Theresa Blvd on Tuscarora Dr. I moved up here to oregon in 1978.

ReplyDeleteCamden Avenue is sure familiar, Marty, and Los Gatos of course. L.G. is a very nice (and expensive) place now from what I saw on my last couple visits to the West Valley to see friends.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with my folks for nine years near Campbell. Later on, I lived in Contra Costa County, most of the over in Antioch. Didn't move up here until '89.
I lived in Campbell too...on Budlawn way....right off the expressway...forget the name of it now. Forgot about that...it was the first house we bought when me and hubby saved enough to get a house. I used to go fishing up in Antioch, did you ever go to Branon Island...{sp} We used to camp there and fish in the slugh and caught lots of channel cats and striped bass. Oh yes, Los Gatos is a very expensive town, but we had rented a little old house before we were able to buy one..but it was not in the expensive area. Wow, what a small world!!!!

ReplyDeleteAs I remember, the San Tomas Expressway runs through part of Campbell. Campbell was and is "The Orchard City" and where my parents bought their house was one block inside San Jose in a housing tract close to Hamilton Avenue, which was the "main drag" of my bicycling youth. I consider Campbell/San Jose my "home town" and always will.
ReplyDeleteI did used to go fishing at Vasona Park near Los Gatos as a kid. Fished in back of the dam there with my friends. Now I think you have to pay to get in the place. We used to run around there on our bikes for free.
I do remember Branon Island. I used to drive over to Bethel Island and Rio Vista. Antioch in the late 70''s was really as much a medium-sized river delta town as much as it was a suburb part of the Bay Area--halfway between the tough river city of Stockton and cosmopolitan San Francisco. I felt it was was like living in two overlapping communities at the same place. By the time my parents left there in the 90's it was a full-on little metropolis. It's fallen on hard times since I gather from the housing crash. But it was a nice place to live and before I moved on out on my own it was a good spot for hiking about in the local county parks sites.

Yes I heard Stockton is on the verge of bankruptcy....We have folks that bought our ranch that lived in Modesto, the wife has been here for 7 yrs trying to keep the place going here, while her husband is still down there and trying to sell their business. Oh and yes I remember Vasona and I think it was Lexington Res. but it might have been called something different, but thats what comes to mind at the moment, we used to go swimming there too. Its been nice going down memory lane with you Doug...thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis week it has been a treat to recall some artists Doug I know where I was that day. I find it ironic how one knows as you say here exactly where they were as after I bought the song above I rushed home on my ten speed on South Bay Road....I must have played Barbaranne ten times.
