“There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody."--Elizabeth Warren, former nominee for Wall Street Regulator and current Senatorial candidate from Massachusetts. "This is the crux of the matter. What is tearing people apart is the unrelenting and insidious American myth of the supremacy of the individual - one person can will himself out of poverty, if one only tried hard enough. The poor are simply those who did not try hard enough. "Americans must surely be made to realize that it is a singularly grotesque way of living a social life to reject anything and everything to do with helping others in the society that they share, simply because "I shouldn't be made to help others that simply lacked the will to try to be as well-off as I am." They have forgotten that a social life means a life of constant negotiation and compromise, cooperation and agreement -- a massive, constantly evolving pact among millions, the social contract. "A contract, which is well past due for renegotiation." --Brian K., commentary from the New York Times

  1. Who the heck is
Elizabeth Warren? second time I heard of her today, the first time did not make sense, and who Brian K?

  2. She was the Obama apppointee the GOP in Congress refused to even consider.

They refused to confirm her as a regulator on behalf of consumers against the predatory practices of some Wall Street Bankers.

She has now moved on to challenge Scott Brown next year for the Senate seat long held by Ted Kennedy. Her chances right now look good.

Brian K is just a guy from New York City speaking his mind on the New York Times website.

  3. I took this day off Doug and it's crazy you know. The more I see the more I understand that it's not of worth.
I say that as a friend - you do know that.

  4. America is entirely lost right now - yet American's wish to feed on this rather than a cure. That is what
    amazes me.

  5. I read this the other day, Doug, and from where I sit, if that woman ran for President, I'd vote for her - twice.

  6. You're not the only one who's amazed; m'friend....

  7. Screw that. Let's run her for President.

  8. The post she was quoted on a different blog made no sense at all to me, and when this guy mentioned her I wondered . What is her experience that qualified her for the post that she was refused? I watch CNN and FOX pro and cons of both sides and I never heard of her. I think America would be fine if the President and the legislature would wake up to what the majority of Americans want and not a obscure poll that a biased News outlet does.

  9. Tess, Elizabeth Warren is probably the only person in government who gets it right now.

That's probably all that need be said - the rest, you can go here and find: http://tinyurl.com/64ccxj6

  10. I can not comment on her, I do not know her except for the robin Hood slanted post that I read earlier from some one else.Robin Hood would not be so bad if the silly spending wasn't so bad.

  12. Yes, we need to break this gridlock business. I think Ms. Warren can help wake people up.

  13. Twice-voted citizens are questionably legal, Will, but given the reports of vote-suppresion tactics of the GOP in states like Ohio back in '04 ....I'm just sayin' :-)

  14. I'm sure there is a reason she shouldn't...well, because....and....uh...I can't think of one, Will.

  15. So you support, along with a majority of most Americans, ending the tax breaks of the Bush era that favored the richest Americans.

(This according to Gallup, a non cable-news polling service resected for decades.)

    Yea!

Glad to have you aboard Tess!

  16. She was turned down for the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau because too many conservatives know that a whipsmart Harvard professor would be too hard to roll. Many GOP members and some Democrats in office don't even want consumers protected from Wall Street. Protecting Wall Street is their bread and butter, their source of donations and their fallback retirement plan.

Please see the link Will posted. And have a nice weekend.

  17. I do not favor any all or nothing decision. I think if they close the loop holes, have a higher tax on imports, develop a flat income tax that you have to make at least 30,000 a year to be taxed, I am for that as long a congress and the president step up to the plate and vote out their huge retirement packages, stop government unions, it would be a start. There is no reason what so ever that a government worker gets one cent more pay or benefits than private paid workers. They need to get rid of the czars, all of them, get rid of waste starting with the dept of Education, The list goes on, most important start being of the people fore the people. instead of selfish greed and party ideology.
Too many people say small changes will make not difference, we should remember the mighty Mississippi started out a drop, then two, then three then a small stream.

  18. I guess we still are apart on some economic matters. "Boring world it would be if all agreed on everything," as my Uncle Moab used to say on Visitor's Day at "San Q".

Have a nice weekend anyway, Tess, and please pick out a "Doug's Site" souveineur as you exit through the gift shop.

  19. I'm betting that someone with a sensible point of view will fail to get elected.....

    Sorry, is my cynicism showing?

  22. Hi Doug, Jack sent me here to read your blog....I love this lady and hope she gets in as Senator if she cant get into the white house any other way. She is smart and knows what she talks about. I would vote for her if she ran for President even over Obama right now. A fresh voice and a will of steel is what we need to change this country into something worthwhile fighting for.
