Super Bowl XXIII The Greatest Finish in an NFL Football Championship

My favorite Super Bowl hands down is the 1989 San Francisco 49ers--Cincinnati Bengals game.  It was the first one that featured a winning touchdown drive in the last three minutes of the game. Quarterback Joe Montana took his squad the length of the field.   Wide Receiver Jerry Rice caught 11 passes to set a record for the contest.  But it was the little-used receiver who was an off-season car salesman, John Taylor, who caught the winning pass.

The Super Bowl is probably the most overhyped sports event on the globe. Many of the games are blow-outs, overshadowed  by too much commercial glitz.  But this one--at least for 49er fans--- lived up to the  hype.

In 2006, NFL.com voted this game the greatest Super Bowl of all time. The announcer was Lon Simmons, long time voice of the 'Niners.

  1. Not my choice. I like the ending of the six involving my favorite team and the only team to have six Super Bowl wins. My beloved Steelers. I will have to rate this 7th

  2. Saw this game live on UK TV. Edge of the seat stuff even though it went well into the small hours here. Excellent game.

  3. Hahaha. Well, Jacquie you are in good company--I saw a poll in "USA Today" saying that more people watch the Spuper Bowl for the commercials now. Amazing in a way. Most of the times we zap through the commercials if we can.

  4. You know ,Fred, I thought you just might mention that Pittsburgh has an extra Super Bowl win over The Niners, who have won every Super Bowl they have ever been in by the way! :-)

For me the most incredible Steelers moment is when they beat the Oakland Raiders in the early 1970's on Franco Harris' immaculate reception against the Oakland Raiders in the 1972 AFC Championship. I saw that as a kid and was amazed. (Wasn't a Raider fan--so it didn't matter to me, but wow what a play.) Wish the Niners of the 80's and the Steelers of the 70's or the Jerome Bettis teams could have played against each other.

Be interesting to hear what other Super Bowls were more dramatic than this one. I think the NY Giants victory over the Patriots a couple years back was pretty huge I have to admit.

At least neither of us are Bills fans. How sad for them.

  5. Glad you saw this one, Jim. I don't know how many countries carry this one live, but I know that BBC World always gives it a big buildup on their Sunday Morning Sport Segments.

I was at a Super Bowl Party in the early evening and we had a bunch of Niner fans literally ready to stop breathing a couple times on that drive--until Montana hooked up with John Taylor! Then we all went nuts like we hit the lottery. A great memory.

  6. OK, you heretic. .Here's your beloved Steelers. :-) The December, 1972, "Immaculate Reception".

There's even a statue of Harris making the deflection catch at the Pittsburgh Airport! (Other comments below.)

  7. There is nothing that can match the sport. It is a segment within each year that really everyone watches Doug. Just my own opinion but it's something that truly is amazing to watch.
