This song and video are taken from the recent film "500 Days of Summer". It's a cleverly constructed film about a young man and women meeting at an office and starting a relationship. The female character, Summer Finn, tells her new beau, Tom, right off that she is not into a serious relationship.
As soon as he is smitten by her intelligence and playful behavior and the fun they are having informally, he starts feeling confident he can win her over to something more serious.
This is not a romantic comedy for people who believe in destiny with a capital "D" at the movies, this is not that movie.
It's more of a movie about how many dating relationships evolve for young adults and sometimes how hard it can be when people are in two different places in their lives.
"This movie is not a love story" is the tag line of the film. But it is about love, and heartbreak, and a renewal of faith in love. And, yes, its funny too!

I enjoyed the music but I have not seen the movie. I have added it to my Doug has recommended another good movie that I must see
ReplyDeleteGood to hear. I think you'll find it offbeat and a cut above the pack, Fred.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I ever told you I like offbeat.
ReplyDeleteI gathered as much from some of your posts ;-)
ReplyDeleteI share his confidence from the scenes in this clip Doug....intelligence, wit and beauty are pretty formidable attributes in the human attraction stakes I think.
ReplyDeleteLike most of the clips you post I have never seen this film either, but it seems like a touching comment on young love and the joy and pathos of it all.
Thanks for this glimpse of the film it is good to have an impression of it should it crop up in conversation or is discussed on the radio which is just about as close as I get to the movies nowadays I'm afraid.
That may be changing soon however, because I hope to be more available to pursue such leisure-time activities of which many years of abstinence has now stored up like a overflowing dam.
The film looks interesting Doug. Intellect hold a very strong attraction. I suppose it takes us on a journey that can be very exciting. The search for the truth in everything takes one right through to the end of our lives. If love is thrown in............wow!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this. You find a good few gems for us to see.
Cassandra
That's good news, AA. I hope you can get out and about on a more casual basis.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the film, but I wanted most of all to post the song. The music is an end in itself in this case. But you're right--it is a more intelligent film for me than the usual entertaining (mostly) but not always realistic genre of romantic comedy.
I think "500 Days of Summer", besides having a lot of great music that has me hunting down the CD, points up in the story of Summer and Tom how people in their twenties can be swayed by sheer attraction and fun into believeing "'this is really love', when it might just be the yin and yang of a couple smart people having a good time for a set period of time and experiences.
ReplyDeleteAs we get to know ourselves better, we can better separate ourselves from those who would make good friends and actual romantic partners we are simpatico with on enough levels.
I think I'll stop now because I'm making this film sound a bit too serious. :-) It is a comedy (really!) and I think most will smile and not frown by the time to story has unfolded.
Yes, it is easy to think we have found real love, especially in ones student days when everyone is anxious to show friends they are like minded. It is all fun for a while, but it is soon over and we move on.
ReplyDeleteOf course, in that moving on some people think their heart has been broken, but it is all part of growing up and finding ones way.
Thinking back, I could have made a terrible mistake if I had married ex boyfriends. We have all stayed close so that has been a real blessing.
I didn't recognise the main couple starring in the film. Are they newcomers?
In my twenties, I had two ex-girlfriends who were better friends then romantic partners for me. I think that's one of the reasons the film resonated for me.
ReplyDeleteBoth Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are relative movie newcomers, Cassandra. I hadn't noticed Levitt before myself, but I gather he was on a tv show called "3rd Rock from the Sun" and has grown out to become a in-demand second lead male adult actor.
She's been in a lot of films, but usually in supporting roles like the leading lady's best "buddy". She played Trillian in the poorly received at the box-office big-film version of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy". She also sings well, and can act, so I imagine she's on her way up, so to speak.
