Ann-Margaret sings "13 Men", a song originally released 1962 from the album "The Vivacious One". But I happened to find this song from the "Cocktail Mix Vol. 2 - Martini Madness" CD, released 1996.
I always thought Ann-Margaret would have been twice as alluring if she had only been able to try half as hard to be sexy. But she was a chronological victim of the popular role of an attractive woman as a "child-like sex pot" in the way that Marilyn Monroe was. It was only when she could play adults, such as in Mike Nichols' "Carnal Knowledge", a mature movie about male objectification of women, that she really grew up in the larger sense of the word.
Still, this is one of the most fun tunes of her "kitten with a whip" period.

ReplyDeleteI liked the song Doug, but the images were a bit overwhelming. I see Frank's still a bit shaky and I can see why.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly Ann-Margaret's vivacious assertive style was previously the province of black singers like Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday, so like Elvis she did the same thing in a way, i.e. took black music to white audiences in a newly sexed up form. It's great how she redefines the nuclear holocaust into an erotic fantasy, that must be harder than working with children and animals...well done Ann-Margaret.

ReplyDeleteI hadn't even thought of it in that way, AA! Of course, people commented for years about the resemblance in sexual assertiveness between Elvis and Ann-Margaret,seen in full-bloom in that full-blown cheesy masterpiece of hokum, "Viva Las Vegas" (1963).
ReplyDeleteBut, yeah, I can see A-M singing "Rock Me Daddy With a Steady Roll" a la Bessie and so forth. Quite on the point.
No one, of course, did the connection between sexual fantasy and apocalyptic nightmare as in Stanley Kubrick/Terry Southern and Peter Sellers did in "Dr. Strangelove".
