Did I spot the wonderful Ann Bancroft for a moment? Loads of super clips there, Doug. What splendid entertainment they gave us. Thank you for sharing the video...
It was indeed the wonderful Ann Bancroft as Mrs Robinson in "The Graduate", Cassandra. (One of the best perffromances in a great film from that era in my book.) Some of those clips are all too short, but they are perfectly paced with the song.
I thought it was her. She was indeed a fine actress. I loved her in 84 Charing Cross Road, a film I'm very fond of. I don't think I saw the Graduate. Thank you Doug, I'll look it up. Although short, the clips give one a sense of the wonderful entertainment these stars have brought to the screen. It also jogs the memory to watch some of those films again on a cold winter's night. ;-)
Indeed that montage of clips does make one happy. Seeing Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon together in that brief clip from "The Apartment", to cite just oen example, reminds me what wonderful chemistry they had in the film. "84 Charing Cross" was a fantastic, low-key movie, Casandra. The total book lover's movie really. I read the book--and another by the author,Helene Hanff, and find I can't read it without hearing Ms. Bancroft's marvelous voice. There's probably not too many cold-winter's nights movies as good as "The Graduate". That is one movie I can recommend without equivocation.
Potpurri is a good term, Catherine. It is fun to see so many ladies of the silver screen together. Do feel a little sorry for that poor "flapper" falling unexpectently from the chandelier in that clip from "The Carpetbaggers" (1964). Hopefully she landed safety in a large punch bowl, spiked of course with bootleg "hooch".

ReplyDeleteI read up on the Graduate late last night. I must see if I can get the DVD, they are so cheap these days it isn't worth renting them.
ReplyDeleteAnn Bancroft had a distinctive voice didn't she?
Thank you Doug.
Cassandra
Very much so. Another good Bancroft film is her role as Anne Sullivan (Helen Keller's teacher) in "The Miracle Worker" (1962).
