Here's the best scene and song from a lavish and inventive but not-so successful 1968 film musical, "Finian's Rainbow". It's from a 1950's Broadway hit, with a score by Burton Lane and E Y Harburg. Oddly enough, it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola!
The color in this scene is wonderful and so is Petula Clark.
I've never heard of this one...but I like Petula Clark. Maybe it's on the blockbuster website
ReplyDeleteDon't think its been on television much in the last 25 years--I remember seeing it as a kid back in the Summer of 1968. It's supposed out be out on DVD, so I'm forward to getting a look at this one, complete.
ReplyDeleteWell, I did watch this one recently for the first time in awhile--I have to say I was rather disappointed overall in the film. My memory did serve me well at least in one sense--this is still the best scene in the film. Fans of Petula or Fred Astaire might enjoy parts of this one, but its overlong and the storyline is plain corny. . Not sure what young Mr. Coppola was aiming for here. Some beautiful sets like this one featured are mixed with pedestrian scenes shot on shoddy backlot-style sets.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least that "The Godfather" movie he did four years later came out sort of okay...
Hello !

Here is the english songtext!
CHILLY WINDS (HIDEG SZÉL)
Chilly winds are rustling on my door
There's a twilight in my room.
An old song is playing from Adamo,
Saying farwell to you.
Remembrance of the good old days
Already has gone away,
I'm in pain of delusion,
But I'm still in love with you.
After all these hours have gone away
Rememberances fly away
I don't want you to love any more, still
Have been waiting for you.
Chilly winds are rustling on my door
There's a twilight in my room.
An old song is playing from Adamo,
Saying farwell to you.
