I love her voice and I generally love all the songs she made famous with Burt Bacharach and Hal David and later on with others, including a duet she did with The Spinners called "Then Came You". "Don't Make Me Over" (a song she gave the title to as a young lady when she complained about what her music managers were doing to her) is my favorite, but there's so many others. "Walk On By" is haunting, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" is poignant and has a funny twist at the end, her cover on "Love Letters" is fabulous and distinct. Her singing of the The Theme from "Valley of the Dolls" is truly the best thing in that movie. (OK ,that's not saying much but still...)
But, although, I am from the city she sings about, I don't really like "Do You Know The Way to San Jose?" and was never crazy about it in the first place. It could be it seemed like San jose ws growing so fast the idea of a song adding to its popularity seemed to only encourage the avalanche of growth and "progress" that was sweeping over the place known now as Silicon Valley. But I can listen to it now, and still say it's not much compared to the emotional roller coaster ride of "Message to Michael" or "I'll Never Love This Way Again".
Odd to thnk that there's a new generation that only thinks of her in association with a psychic network. I predict that in the long run that will change.
Anyway, enough of that. Here's a link (below) where you can listen to the lady herself, who, by the way, still is out there touring and making albums. Long life and good health to you, Dionne!
