One of my long-time friends and a first class sports analyst, Dr. Boom, has corrected me on the matter of "The Catch", the now legendary finale to the Dallas-49ers playoff game in 1982 that lauched the Niners into their first Superbowl. It was not Lon Simmons who was in the booth calling the game with ex-Detroit Lion Wayne Walker, but rather sports commentator Don Klein. In addition to actually being at the game at Candlestick in person, the Good Doctor has a recording of the play on an LP featuring SF Forty Niner Highlights. Here is a transcript of the call that brought down the mighty Cowboys:
(KLEIN)"...Third down and three to go. Up to the
line of scrimmage they come now, Solomon slot right. Montana rolls out
under pressure throws his PASS...CAUGHT BY CLARK! DWIGHT CLARK HAS IT!
DWIGHT CLARK MAKES A LEAPING CATCH AND IT'S A TOUCHDOWN FOR THE FORTY NINERS!"
(WALKER)"That's Montana again makin' somethin' outta nothin'. He had big
pressure, and he threw the ball high into the endzone so it would be
caught or go out of the back of the endzone and it was good for six!"
(KLEIN)"Now Wersching for the extra point...snapped, placed IT'S GOOD!
IT'S GOOD AND THE NINERS LEAD IT!"
Ah, a sweet sonnet in prose.
This is another special night for the new Forty Niners. Led by sophmore QB Alex Smith with 2TDs and 144 years from fullback Frank Gore, they beat the division-leading Seattle Seahawks for the second time this year. They are now 6-8, still in an outside position to make the playoffs, and have offically left mediocrity behind.
