Charade (1963)-Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn-- L.O.V.E.( Nat King Cole)

A nice compilation showcasing one of the best romantic comedy-thrillers ever, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant in a bit of dream casting. They don't make them like this anymore.

Charade
1963
also with Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy
Director: Stanley Donen
Screenplay by Peter Stone

  1. Ah the innocence, the lightness of touch and pure escapism are such endearing qualities now that angst has the upper hand. A great song and a heart warming clip Doug, you are right they don't make them like that anymore....the message has been adulterated and the movies have been adult rated, but there is no harm in imagining a happier time when we were all young and beautiful. The kid with the water pistol would now be on an Anti Social Behaviour Order if he tried that in the UK today, so some things have improved I guess.

  3. Love the song! I was/ am a huge Hepburn fan. She was one of the best of all time. Cary Grant always seemed a bit uptight for my liking. He seemed like a stick in the mud.

  4. Here here. I think that lightness of touch you mention is what I miss the most--I think, however, that it is almost impossible to replicate in popular culture.
When this film came out, the death of JFK and the rise of Vietnam were right around the corner. Not for nothing do so many popular films like 'Hairspray" and "Down With Love", et al, set themselves in this era.

  5. Glad you enjoyed it--I was looking for something with the Henry Mancini/Johnny Mercer theme song, but Nat King Cole and these clips were too good not to post. And, yes, our man aaran does sum the feelings one gets from seeing these talented people and these moments strung together quite well.

  6. I am sensing a theme here with all the Hepburn postings. I hope you wife never finds out you are pining after Miss Hepburn.

  7. Believe me, Fred, Shirley knows all about it and she has been "ribbing" me for years on how Audrey Hepburn was/is my true love and such. She knows better, but she is right that Miss A. Hepburn was such elegance and class I don't see how any man couldn't be charmed be her, on screen or off.

Oddly, I met my wife in the same month that Audrey passed away at 63 in Switzerland. I was bummed about hearing that my favorite female star was so sick. Then it seemed like an imagined door closed for me and a real one opened.

  8. I am glad you are living in reality and not so much in fantasy. Although both of spend a lot of time in the virtual world.

  9. I think as long as you make sure your fantasies behave, they are quite harmless.

  10. Audrey did an amazing life's work for UNICEF....her heart was as beautiful as her face.

  11. Yes, I think that's a fine way to put it. And I think if she were still here, she would be wherever kids who were malnourished today were suffering and needed the world's attention.
