Before there was Weird Al Yankovic, there was Spike Jones and his City Slickers. Spike (1911-1965) along with Red Noble, Bill Grayson, Winstead "Doodles" Weaver, Mel Blanc and others did send-ups of romantic and mushy popular tunes. And they weren't afraid to use a gun--okay,a starter's pistol-- if they needed to get your attention. Here they are in one of their most famous recordings, done along with a movie short known then as a "soundie".
now that's the kind of bar to belly up to lol..
ReplyDeleteMy first rule: Never go to a saloon with a trigger-happy bartender.
ReplyDeleteI got hold of a Spike Jones compilation record back in High School. Made me an instant fan. I was a volunteer Senior Scout "explorer" at a local radio station back then and Jones' records inspired a couple friends and myself to play around with sound effects records on slow Sunday nights to come up with crazy stuff in this vein. Thank goodness for You Tube: it's fun to actually see these guys perform.
