If only every President got the same deserved homage as the great Millard Fillmore (1850-53). Where would we as a nation today be without his steady hand on the national tiller?
???? Did he do anything?
ReplyDeleteIt's not enough that he was known as "Da Man"--you're saying he had to do something ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou hit the nail on the head, Fred. What did Millard do? He was an accidental President who came into office via General Zach Taylor's death. He couldn't even get his Whig Party nomination in the convention of 1852. He's the only one of two Presidents to get kicked to the curb by his own party convention while he was in office. This kind of thing happens to accidental Presidents--Gerald Ford nearly lost the 1976 GOP nomination to that Reagan Guy.
"Da man"later ran for President in 1856--on the bigoted Know-Nothing Party Ticket. He was not a major player in that election.
That's why I prefer NOT to have a holiday celebrating all the Presidents. I wanted to get into this later in a separate blog , but let's spill it out now:
I think Washington and Lincoln should have a single "joint" holiday--and this has nothing to do with legalizing pot--and let the more obscure Presidents revel in their obscurity.
Fillmore did install a working bath tub in the White House
ReplyDeleteDrat! Just when I thought he had accomplished absolutely nothing.
