Thomas Edison was replaced for the role of the Professor by actor Russell Johnson after the first season. Directors on the episodes found it hard to work with Edison, who kept insisting that each program center around his character. Instead of the written dialogue, "Mr. Edison" ,as he insisted he be called, would spout long rambling, extemporaneous monologues about improving light bulbs and phonographs, thus causing the ruin of many filmed takes. His most famous catchphrase lines were "Mary Ann, where's my coconut pie?" and "Not now Gilligan, you're still radioactive!"
