He had an aristocrat’s bearing — tall, handsome and composed — and an authoritative baritone ideal for summoning an aide or courtier.

But Vidal made his living — a very good living — from challenging power, not holding it. He was wealthy and famous and committed to exposing a system often led by men he knew firsthand. During the days of Franklin Roosevelt, one of the few leaders whom Vidal admired, he might have been called a “traitor to his class.” The real traitors, Vidal would respond, were the upholders of his class.}}

http://www.theeagle.com/article/20120802/BC0304/120809936/1090/BC0304&source=RSSChristy Kidhttp://christykid.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2503771624520315711.post-63323021892899811222012-08-05T23:18:51.000-07:002012-08-05T23:18:51.000-07:00I won't quibble over that.

His essays on the Nixon and Reagan Eras were dead on in their attack. He was indeed a unique personage in the realm of American commentary and there is no one on the horizon with the background needed in the broad sweep of the nation to attack the Establishment.doug noakeshttp://dnoakes.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2503771624520315711.post-8998253693983455992012-08-04T10:44:21.000-07:002012-08-04T10:44:21.000-07:00I salute the passing of the bad boy of the America...I salute the passing of the bad boy of the American aristocracy. I read Myra Breckinridge back in the early 70s and its follow up Myron when I was a railway signalman, languishing in my box alone. I have also followed Vidal since then and have paid particular attention to his deconstruction of the military industrial complex. He was a multifaceted commentator who stands in stark contrast to the one dimensionality of the US media circus today. As you say Doug we are unlikely to see his type again, the American establishment is diminished by his passing, just when we thought they could not be diminished any more than they already have been.
With Gore Vidal's death the last vestiges of decency disappear from Washington's inner sanctum and all that remains there now are criminals, liars and madmen.Aaran Aardvarkhttp://aaranaardvark.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2503771624520315711.post-60137759594094963152012-08-03T07:48:36.000-07:002012-08-03T07:48:36.000-07:00You're very welcome Lucija.You're very welcome Lucija.doug noakeshttp://dnoakes.multiply.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2503771624520315711.post-45405202361694575332012-08-02T22:28:53.000-07:002012-08-02T22:28:53.000-07:00An excellent 'tribute' Doug, to quite a fa...An excellent 'tribute' Doug, to quite a fascinating man.
